A taste of Italian style at Amboise

It is often said that Amboise has the most Italian flair of all the Loire Valley cities. The presence of many tourists from the other side of the Alps is a cheerful reminder of what the Italian Renaissance brought to the area five centuries ago.

Thus, Amboise is an unmissable step during a Loire Valley bike tour, especially as it is also a famous place for a first flight over the Loire Chateaux, by helicopter or hot air balloon.

The exceptional patrimony of Amboise

Amboise is a serene, easygoing town, true to the image of splendour that characterised that blessed era. Pedestrians will enjoy exploring the streets lined with boutiques as well as the esplanades along the Loire river banks where excellent views of the river can be found.

Attractions in Amboise include 3 spectacular monuments from the Renaissance period:

  • the royal Amboise castlesteeped in the legacies of Charles VIII, Anne of Brittany and Francis I,
  • the Clos-Lucé, where Leonardo da Vinci spent his last days - models of his many inventions are on display in the gardens there,
  • the Royal estate of Chateau Gaillard, with its gardens created by Dom Pacello da Mercogliano.

At the southern gateway to the city, visitors can admire an architectural folly set in the centre of a large park: the Chanteloup pagoda, a monument commissioned by the Duke of Choiseul who was, at the time, exiled from Louis XV’s court.

The farmer’s market of Amboise and other activities

The city is also home to one of the largest farmer’s markets in the area, every Friday and Sunday morning.

From the market, you can easily reach the river banks and board anexcursion boat for a pleasant nature outing on the Loire. Then head to the Val de Loire aquarium, where visitors of all ages will enjoy learning about fish from the local area and elsewhere. If you’re looking for a family outing, the wildlife parks in the Réserve de Beaumarchais and Mini-Châteaux will be right up your street. The beach of Nazelle-Négron is also a good idea!
