Around 1630, a magnificent château was built in Richelieu. Cardinal Richelieu, the first minister of Louis XIII, was at the height of his success. The château was the grandest ever built in France, before Versailles. It was demolished in 1835, with the exception of its dome, orangery and wine cellars. The garden paths, canals, rose garden, landing stage, locks and hundreds of remarkable tree species make this an exceptional site.
